Dean Street Townhouse

A creative couple with a toddler and another baby on the way came to MKCA with a request to reimagine their newly purchased Cobble Hill brownstone. Having been recently gut renovated, the building was in excellent condition, and mainly required furnishing. The clients have amassed a significant collection of artworks by leading contemporary artists, many of them emerging, and challenged us to create an domestic environment that would be a worthy foil to their trove of paintings and other works.

Rather than receding into a neutral background, the architecture and interiors of the home assert themselves, providing a necessary grounding and enveloping the collection into a punchy and cohesive visual landscape that is a setting for a rich family life. Vintage furnishings are sprinkled among custom pieces commissioned from independent designers, all set on color blocked carpets. Commercial grade textiles in cleanable natural fibers like wool and mohair were used extensively, but the attitude of the project, like that of the family who live here, is one where art and design are simply part of life – like dogs and toys, and birthday parties – and something to be celebrated and enjoyed every day.
