HSVS, a social services agency founded in 1869 to care for orphans in Brooklyn has grown over 150 years into a major agency working to address a host of issues around family separation, and is one of the largest foster care agencies in New York City, serving children and families in crisis.
Since 1906, HSVS has occupied a headquarters building on Boerum Place in downtown Brooklyn, near the Brooklyn Bridge. MKCA, in collaboration with a team that includes graphic designers, lighting designers, artists and curators is creating a series of graphic elements for the building’s facade to capture the attention of the 100,000 cars that pass by the building each week and pedestrian passersby. These elements are intended to communicate the history and mission of the agency, and to encourage the local community to get involved. All of the design services for the project have been provided pro-bono, and MKCA in conjunction with the HSVS board and project team are working resource the project through in-kind donations from manufacturers, fabricators, and installers.
