The office is working with Boston Valley Terra Cotta on a custom production method to manufacture a glazed terra cotta rain screen system for our East Side Townhouse project.
In collaboration with Boston Valley’s sculptors and ceramic engineers, we’ve developed an striated skin with an undulating faceted geometry. The raw terra cotta is extruded through custom dies and the wet material is wire struck by hand along laser cut wooden jigs, fired, and glazed. In addition to satisfying the desires of the commissioning client for an extraordinarily crafted and distinctive facade, the facade as well as the building’s massing were subject to the stringent requirements of the New York City Landmarks Commission and subsequently approved for construction as proposed.
