MKCA’s Signal Space research and the vertical garden facade system from our East Side Townhouse will be exhibited as part of City By The Numbers: Big Data and the Urban Future, a symposium and exhibition co-sponsored by Places Journal, and Pratt Institute.
The exhibition also includes a selection of projects from Michael Chen and Jason Lee’s Crisis Fronts research seminar and studio at Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture.
Big Data — the exponential growth and availability of information — is one of the defining phenomena of our time. It affects us all on multiple levels — with far-reaching social, environmental, and governmental significance. To help make sense of Big Data, and to provide insights into how we understand, experience, and create cities, Pratt Institute and Places Journal will present a symposium: City by Numbers: Big Data and the Urban Future.
The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will convene an international roster of leading professionals and scholars from a range of fields, including Jessie Braden, director of the Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative at Pratt Institute; David Burney, former New York City Commissioner of the Department of Design and Construction and associate professor at Pratt; Gökçe Günel, faculty fellow in anthropology, Columbia University; Colin Harrison, leader, Urban Systems Collaborative; Constantine Kontokoska, fellow at the Center for Urban + Progress, New York; Laura Kurgan, director of the Spatial Information Design Lab at Columbia University; Shannon Mattern, associate professor at the New School for Public Engagement; Malcolm McCullough, professor at University of Michigan and author of Ambient Commons; Federico Parolotto, partner, Mobility in Chain, Milan; Adam Pruden, interaction designer, Frog Design; Mark Shepard, artist/architect and creator of the Sentient City Survival Kit; Anthony Townsend, author of Smart Cities: Big Data Civic Hackers and the Quest for a New Utopia; and James von Klemperer, principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and designer of the master plan for New Songdo City, Korea.
