Civics and Community

  • Design Advocates

MKCA co-founded Design Advocates, a platform for architects and designers to share resources and collaborate on efforts to serve the public good through pro bono projects, research, and advocacy.

Design Advocates is working with local businesses, nonprofits, and institution to help them adapt their spaces and operations to the COVID-19 era and beyond, and is creating a network of design practices and independent professionals to provide services and insight for the common good.

  • Concourse House

MKCA provided design services, pro-bono to Concourse House, shelter that serves women with young children who are transitioning out of homelessness. We were inspired by the shelter’s mission and the vision of a generous donor to organize fundraising events and create a benefit auction featuring donated works from some of the leading lights of the contemporary design scene.

  • Essential Community Spaces
Our institutional work is focused on creating durable community engagement and spaces that elevate the work of organizations that serve the disadvantaged and the public good. MKCA partners with many clients not only to deliver design excellence, but to help communicate mission, raise funds, and secure resources to realize quality design in context where it is needed the most.
  • Data Driven

We develop research on technology and how it impacts urban living and infrastructure, and we develop strategic partnerships to put our data and expertise into use to serve the public good. Our efforts to visualize and identify the hidden infrastructure of mobile phone networks was used not only to create a map and database of all 14,000-plus mobile phone base stations in New York City, but resulted in a data and insight sharing partnership with Citibike to provide data that is used to locate bike share stations and grow the system. Our research into micro and nano ecosystems that are created by passive shading and exposure impacts resulted in building and city planning analysis tools and methodologies that measure the impact and potential of future urban development on urban biodiversity.

  • Citizen Science
Urban analytics, data visualization, and mapping are some of the ways that we craft stories about how technological, demographic, and environmental change are impacting urban space. We develop research on technology and how it impacts urban living and infrastructure, and we develop strategic partnerships to put our data and expertise into use to serve the public good.
